We are excited to announce another new feature, Print to Mapsheet! Have you ever needed to overlay a large amount of data into a new map, but don’t want to bog the new map down? Print to Mapsheet allows you to take data from one map, and create an overlay to use on other maps. 

How can I use this?

We know we have a truly creative and diverse user group, and that you all find unique ways to use this feature. Here are some of the use cases we have envisioned.

First Response:

SAR (or other) teams may have a long incident requiring many live tracks. Print to Mapsheet allows you to take live tracks (perhaps one mapsheet/overlay from each day), and print them to a mapsheet in your account. This would allow you to overlay data intensive live tracks from a previous day, without slowing down the map as the incident continues for multiple days. 

Guiding Company:

A guiding company could create an “open terrain”  run list at a morning meeting, print this to a mapsheet, leaving guides with a clear/cleaned up map while in the field but also allowing a quick on/off to keep the map clear for in field navigation. 

Recreation:

A recreational user may find this feature helpful when planning a very large undertaking, such as a through-hike. Having the entire through hike or other large route in your map in the form of a GPX may slow the map down while in the field. Printing this large route to a mapsheet allows you to have the big picture turned on when you want, and off when you need to focus on one step at a time and navigation. 

Instructions on using this feature:

If you’d like to print a mapsheet for use on your account, select “print” on the left hand side on the web. Adjust the format to “mapsheet” and edit the other settings to your needs. Once created, the mapsheet will save to your account (or your team’s account) and be available as an overlay just like imported mapsheets. 

You can find detailed instructions for printing mapsheets in this section of the user guide: Print to Mapsheet. Like other printing options, this is available only from a web browser (not the app). Once created, you can add the mapsheet to any map using the instructions here: Adding a Mapsheet to a map.

Print to Mapsheet is available to users with a Desktop subscription ($100/year) or those on a CalTopo Teams account. To upgrade or view individual subscriptions go to Caltopo.com/join. If your organization is interested in a Teams account, more information can be found at Caltopo.com/about/teams.
