Perhaps one of the most requested features is finally here to stay: Mobile Snap To! As many of us use our mobile devices more than our laptops, adding the Snap To functionality to the mobile app is an exciting addition.

Snap To shown on the mobile app.

Currently available on mobile versions 1.20.1 and higher, Mobile Snap To functionality works on your mobile device with a data connection. In future app updates, this will also be available when working offline. Update your app version in the App Store or Google Play.

Snap To refers to the ability for CalTopo to trace a trail, road, or other marked route on the map when you are creating lines. You can snap to lines from Open Street Map (OSM)  data, U.S. Forest Service (USFS) data, hydro (rivers/streams), or existing drawn lines and polygons on your map. This has been a staple of CalTopo on the web for a long time and is incredibly useful when planning routes or measuring distances or elevation profiles.

Planning on a mobile device is much easier with this added functionality, and snap to also works with the measure tool. If you want to quickly check how many miles are left on your route or between two locations, you can easily snap to the trail ahead to get an estimated distance as well as elevation gain and loss along the intended route.

More about how this feature works both on the web and mobile app can be found in this section of the user guide: Snap To.
